Firefighting crews from the U.S. Forest Service are currently attacking a small fire in the Big Bear Valley, located on Gold Mountain, just north of Baldwin Lake. The fire is centered around a single snag, or tree, and the burn area is an area of about 30 feet by 30 feet. Given last night’s weather, this fire, which started just after midnight, is likely the result of a lightning strike, though cause has not yet been determined. Firefighting crews, include a helicopter to do water drops, are still on scene on this small Gold Mountain-area fire this afternoon.
Update as of 2pm: Forest Service crews have controlled the fire, and held the burn area to 30 feet by 30 feet. Evidence found at the site suggests that a squatter or camper had been in the area, though the Gold Mountain fire remains under investigation.
