Big Bear Lake, CA, January 21, 2014 – It’s time for another Fourth Friday at The Gallery—-and this month’s featured artist is Jessica Sandek.
Sandek uses pointillism, a painstaking style of applying paint in tiny dots instead of continuous lines. She also burns into wood, which is an example of pyrography, or “writing with fire”, a technique that has been practiced across the world as traditional folk art for millennia.
The Big Bear resident is a native New Yorker who earned a BFA at the Art Institute of Chicago. She has taught art to children and adults, illustrated a book, and sold her sculpture and painting through bicoastal gallery shows, art fairs and commissions. Sandek has exhibited her work both locally–at United Wood Craftsmen, Equada Outfitters, Art on the Lake and ArtWalk in Big Bear Lake–and further afield, at Lucha’s Walking Store in Pasadena; at Artwalk 2007 in Escondido; and in several New York venues.
She explains poetically what her creative outlet means to her: “When I’m doing my art there are no words, only the noise of feeling. Part of being a person is being in a state of constant motion. We are pushed and pulled, hurled and tossed, spun, lifted, dropped, grabbed, released. It is a vortex of churning, volatile beauty. I hope that the viewer can catch a glimpse of this life the way I do. And maybe even relate…”
The public is invited to meet the artist and view her art during Fourth Friday at The Gallery (40750 Village Drive), on January 24 from 7 to 9pm. Wine and light hors-d’oeuvres will be served.
