San Bernardino National Forest, May 7, 2013 – This morning, a Sheriff’s helicopter spotted three hikers reported missing Sunday. At approximately 10:15 a.m., the three men — Ryan Shankles, and Miguel DeLatorre from Oceanside, and David Yoder from Carlsbad — were found in the area of Northfork Meadows, close to Mineshaft Campground. They are being reunited with their families after medical personnel on scene found them to be in good condition.
The trio had spent the night on Friday in the Heart Bar Campground. On Saturday morning, they packed food and water and drove to the Fish Creek Trail, with the intent to day-hike to the Mt. San Gorgonio summit.
Early Sunday morning, a friend reported them missing to the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station. San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Members immediately responded to the area, while a sheriff’s helicopter conducted an aerial search. The search was suspended for the night at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday then resumed at 6:30 a.m. Monday with approximately 40 search members on foot and horseback and patrolling the surrounding area. At approximately 2:00 p.m., weather conditions allowed the Sheriff’s helicopter to again assist in the search.
