Angelus Oaks, CA, April 26, 2013 (1:45 p.m.) – The California Highway Patrol says the time frame for the reopening of Highway 38 is still unknown, but the closure section has shortened considerably. The thirty-mile closure has been reduced to a three-mile section of Route 38 from Angelus Oaks to Camp Cedar Falls near mile post marker 23.
Angelus Oaks residents only can access Angelus Oaks from Route 38 at Valley of the Falls Drive. Motorists and visitors traveling to Big Bear and the National Forest must use State Route 330, which is accessible from Interstate 210 in Highland, or use State Route 18 from either San Bernardino or Lucerne Valley.
The Barton Flats recreation area can only be accessed from Big Bear. At this time, no forest roads, trails or recreations facilities have been closed as a result of the highway closure.
At approximately 9:35 a.m. today, a fuel tanker laden with gasoline and diesel fuel overturned on Route 38 below Angelus Oaks. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was called in, since some of the hazardous material ran into a creek.
