Volunteers Needed for Bighorn Sheep Survey at February’s End

Volunteers are needed on February 28 and March 1 to assist in the annual survey of bighorn sheep in the San Gabriel Mountains. The California Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Forest Service, and the Society for Conservation of Bighorn Sheep have conducted annual surveys for bighorn sheep in the range since 1979. The mountain range once held an estimated 740 bighorn sheep–the largest population in California. The population declined over 80% through the 1980s but appears to be on the increase, with recent estimates reaching 300. Volunteers will follow a guide to designated observation sites in the San Gabriel Mountains on Sunday and count and record bighorn sheep observed. No survey experience is necessary but volunteers must attend a mandatory orientation at 6pm on Saturday, February 28 in Rancho Cucamonga.
