The Independence Day holiday marks one of the biggest recreation weekends of the year on the San Bernardino National Forest, and visitors are reminded to be fire-safe. Possession and use of fireworks on the national forest is prohibited, and campfires are only permitted at developed sites in designated fire rings in campgrounds, picnic grounds and at yellow post sites; outside of developed sites, only propane or gas cooking stoves are permitted. Per Forest Supervisor Jeanne Wade Evans, “We want to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable visit while always remaining aware of the current situation outdoors and the potential for wildfire.” Those enjoying the San Bernardino National Forest are also reminded that an Adventure Pass must be displayed on parked vehicles when in recreation and picnic areas, among others; Adventure Passes can be purchased from the Big Bear Discovery Center and local retailers, some of which also offer the $5 day pass. The Big Bear Discovery Center, located on the north shore of Big Bear Lake, also has available free forest visitor’s guides, and information on off-highway vehicles; an OHV riding area map is also available. For more information, you can also call the Big Bear Discovery Center and Ranger Station at 909/866-3437.
