As a means of honoring National Trails Day, which the American Hiking Society started in 1993, the San Bernardino National Forest Association is inviting the community to contribute to maintenance of some favorite local trails tomorrow. Launching from the Big Bear Discovery Center at 9am on June 6, which is National Trails Day, volunteers will be completing the revamped loop of the Woodland Interpretive Trail and removing invasive weeds along the Alpine Pedal Path. As the Discovery Center’s Director Denis Thomas says, “Every morning in the summer I ride my bike to work along the Alpine Pedal Path, and pass by many people exercising on the trail. It’s a fantastic way to spend your morning!” Those who wish to participate in the National Trails Day work party will be provided with tools; the SBNFA just asks that volunteers bring water, work gloves and enthusiasm. Once the 9am work party wraps, volunteers will be treated to a lakeside BarBQ lunch.
