San Bernardino, CA, June 25, 2012, 8:00am – Summer is the season when you and your family may spend more time outdoors. It is also the time when you may come in contact with wild or stray animals, or unfamiliar pets that can put you and your family in danger of exposure to rabies. The County of San Bernardino Public Health Lab has confirmed 5 rabid bats in the last two weeks. Rabies is a deadly disease that can occur when people are exposed to, or get bitten by an infected animal. Rabies is almost always fatal in humans after symptoms begin. Therefore, it is urgent to get medical attention as soon as possible for any animal bite or possible rabies exposure. Animals with rabies may act differently from healthy ones. Wild animals may move slowly or may act as if they are tame. A pet that is usually friendly may snap at you or may try to bite.
