Mountain residents should be aware of a mountain lion in the San Bernardino mountains. Per a statement just received by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department: “There have been several sightings of a mountain lion on the north side of Lake Arrowhead. Citizens are strongly urged to stay away from the mountain lion and to contact the Twin Peaks Sheriff’s Station at 336-0600 if there is a close encounter. The California Department of Fish and Game has been notified and is working with the Sheriff’s Department with regard to the mountain lion. Do not feed or attempt to approach the mountain lion. If the mountain lion is in close proximity; avoid rapid movements, running, loud, excited talk, and do not turn your back to the mountain lion. Watch the cat at all times and seek a safer location, or one above the lion, if available.”
It should also be noted that, on the other side of the mountain, in the Forest Falls area, bear sightings prompted the closure of The Falls Picnic Area in July. Though since re-opened, Forest Service officials advise that, should you encounter a bear, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to appear as large as possible. If attacked, they say, fight back. Specifics on the bear-prompted closure at The Falls Picnic Area are posted in our story of August 13.
