Yesterday’s bomb scare at Big Bear High School was the second in as many school days, and resulted in an early-out for students in the noon hour as law enforcement did a thorough sweep of the campus to make sure that there was no bomb to be found. The seriousness of these bomb threats at the high school has prompted the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station to partner with the national WeTip hotline to offer a $1,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible. Those with any information with regard to Friday’s or Tuesday’s bomb threats are encouraged to call WeTip, anonymously, at 1-800-78-CRIME.
As for this morning’s closure of Maple Lane, that was to accommodate the Sheriff’s Department’s simulation of a drinking and driving incident for high school students as part of the “Every 15 Minutes” campaign, given that prom is this weekend and, nationally, every 15 minutes someone in the U.S. dies as a result of an alcohol-related collision.
There are many positive things happening at Big Bear High School.
This week, the DeAnza League champion girls varsity softball team played their second round in CIF post-league competition. Though the Lady Bears lost to Arroyo High School in a close 2-1 game on Tuesday, they wrapped their season with 23 consecutive league wins, and their third consecutive championship in DeAnza League play.
Earlier this month, the BBHS Jazz Band placed 1st and was awarded Best Overall Jazz Band at the Music in the Parks competition in San Francisco. The community is invited to enjoy the award-winning sounds of the Jazz Band as they join the high school’s Concert Choir and Concert Band for two evenings of performances at the PAC. Thursday and Friday shows, which begin at 7:30pm, are offered for just $8, and tickets are available at the door of the Performing Arts Center. The show will also feature soloists, including Jeremy Escudero, who will be performing a song he wrote.
This week, Big Bear High School students celebrate prom, starting with a pre-prom assembly on Friday that will feature the prom court that includes seniors Lindsay Cunningham, Sarah Fagan, Andi Ferraud, Kasey Judge and Allix Miller, and Preston Carlisle, Miles Fulton, Cody Morris, Scott Reynolds and Nick Walker.
And, if you’re a parent of a Big Bear High School student, you may want to know that this is the final week to pre-order a yearbook. These are available from the ASB office for $65 with an ASB card, and $70 without, cash only.
