Big Bear Lake, CA, September 30, 2013 – The City of Big Bear Lake and the Big Bear Cycling Association are partnering with the Mountaintop Ranger District to repair the Alpine Pedal Path over the next three years. Path users will experience short term closures as work progresses along the path.
The first phase began September 17th: grinding out pavement failures, cracks and holes between the east boat ramp near Stanfield Cutoff and the Juniper Point picnic area. Future projects along the path will include striping and upgraded interpretive signs.
The paved trail meanders along the north shore of Big Bear Lake from Stanfield Cutoff to just west of the Solar Observatory on North Shore Lane. It branches off through a pedestrian tunnel under Highway 38/North Shore Drive, to the Cougar Crest Trailhead parking lot, continuing east to the Big Bear Discovery Center.
Being easily accessible for hikers, skaters, joggers and even strollers and wheelchairs, it is one of the most heavily used trails in the forest, by visitors and residents alike. During the winter, visitors often use the path to view largest wintering bald eagle population in Southern California. Bald eagles typically begin arriving in the area in late November and continue to stay in the area until early April.
