Big Bear Lake, CA, July 2, 2014 – The Big Bear Fire Department reminds everyone that all personal fireworks are prohibited in the Big Bear area, even the “Safe and Sane” products. It’s against the law to use any fireworks in a community where they aren’t permitted, and those convicted could be fined up to $50,000 and sent to jail for a year.
Personal fireworks can be unpredictable, and they have resulted in severe injuries and numerous fires; if a fire results from fireworks, the violator could be responsible for damages. It can take hundreds of thousands of gallons of water to control a large wildfire–a strain on resources at any time, but especially during an ongoing drought and the peak water demand that comes with an expected 200,000 visitors. With so much at stake, anyone seeing personal fireworks being used is asked to call 9-1-1 immediately.
