Big Bear Lake, CA, May 30, 2012, 5:00pm – Two spectacular astronomical events so closely related to one another in time, doesn’t happen very often. On May 20 we were treated with a solar eclipse. Now, on June 5 the planet Venus will cross the face of the Sun in its orbit. The last time this happened was in 2004, and it won’t happen again until 2117. First contact, the moment Venus touches the Sun’s northeastern edge, will occur at 3:05pm. Looking through a telescope with a solar filter, you can see a small black dot traveling across the Sun. The transit will last about 6 hours and 10 minutes. Two telescopes with solar filters will be set up at Swim Beach on Park Avenue. The Discovery Center with the San Bernardino National Forest Association and the Recreation and Park District are co-sponsoring the event. The telescopes will be available for viewing on June 5 at about 2:45pm, until sunset.
