Big Bear, CA, September 21, 2016 – The Southern California Mountains Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service is calling for volunteers, ages 6 and older, to join them on National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands, on Saturday, September 24, 2016. Volunteers are needed to help plant hundreds of milkweed plants in the San Bernardino National Forest for monarch butterfly habitat enhancement.
“Bring your family, friends, students, or coworkers to spend the day outdoors giving back to your favorite mountains, the San Bernardinos. Your work will help ensure our public lands continue to be beautiful and healthy places for all to enjoy!” shared Juli Goss, Restoration Manager of the Southern California Mountains Foundation.
Registration is required at MountainsFoundation.org. Participants will meet at 9:00am at the Big Bear Discovery Center, located on the North Shore of Big Bear Lake, and caravan in their own vehicle 13 miles to the planting site in the forest. High clearance vehicles are recommended for travel to the site on dirt roads.
A map, lunch, tools, and gloves will be provided. Participants are encouraged to bring water, hat and sunscreen. A portable toilet will be available on site. The day of giving will end by 3:00pm at the Discovery Center.
Volunteers will receive a fee-free use pass for a National Forest or National Park for their service; good for one year through September 2017.
