The San Bernardino National Forest Association has 20 spots available in its new AmeriCorps program, but they received many more applications. So, the agency developed an extensive orientation process, including a 6 mile hike along Grays Peak trail above Big Bear Valley.
The goal of the local AmeriCorps program is to introduce young adults to conservation-related public service while earning stipends and scholarships for tuition and books. Projects will include tree planting, trail building, native plant nursery maintenance and restoration of fire burned lands.
“Through their service, participants will learn the necessary skills and develop the attitudinal qualities and confidence to position them for meaningful job opportunities,” said SBNFA program director, Sandy Bonilla.
AmeriCorps provides funding to local and national organizations and agencies committed to using national service to address critical community needs in education, public safety, health and the environment. SBNFA recruits from Inland Empire communities, including the mountain communities of Big Bear Lake and Lake Arrowhead to fulfill its capacity. The next recruitment cycle will begin spring, 2010.
