Big Bear, CA, February 18, 2014 – Four years ago, due to budget cuts, BVUSD had to cut funding for the Elementary Strings Program which provides free participation for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students interested in learning to play in an orchestra. Due to the state altering their education funding formula this year, there is a possibility that the District will fund the program again, provided there is enough community support.
Superintendent of schools, Kurt Madden, is having a ‘Fireside Chat’ to gauge that support on Wednesday February 26th, from 6:00 – 7:30pm in the Knickerbocker Mansion Conference Room. The community has rallied around this program, raising the $30,000. per year necessary to keep it alive for the past 4 years.
The result of regaining funding will free up the group to fund other projects such as merit scholarships and instrument rentals for needy kids and educational field trips to see world renowned artists. This is an opportunity for more children to be exposed to music and to continue support for the 150 students already enrolled in the program. This will be the only meeting for the purpose of re-funding the program.
