Update: As of this afternoon, the Oak Glen Fire has burned 1,000 acres. Tune to KBHR 93.3 FM at 3 and 4pm today, for eyewitness accounts of the fire from Rick Herrick, the Bear in the Air. Highway 38 does remain open as of 2:45pm.
We may see some continued drift smoke in our area today (Monday, August 31), given the many fires burning in Southern California. Though not posing a threat to the Big Bear Valley at this time, the Oak Glen Fire, which broke out yesterday afternoon, has now reached roughly 900 burned acres in the area of Potato Canyon and Oak Glen Roads, about five miles north of Banning and Beaumont. Some mandatory evacations were called last night for residents of the south and southeast portions of Oak Glen. According to fire officials with the San Bernardino National Forest this morning, the Oak Glen Fire has not resulted in the closure of Highway 38.
