Big Bear Lake, CA, June 21, 2012, 3:00pm – Law enforcement officials and the California Public Utilities Commission are warning citizens about criminals posing as law enforcement officials who tell you that a loved one is in trouble. The caller may say that you have been listed as an emergency contact and that to get information about your loved one you must call a specific number. This number begins with *72 . If you call the number, the criminal will be able to use your telephone number to charge three-way calls or collect calls. Officials advise that you write down all information a caller gives you about a loved one and then hang up. Don’t call the number they have given to you. Don’t provide the caller with any personally identifiable information like your name, address, or any account numbers. Call a relative or friend you trust to check on your loved one. Then, call your telephone company and give them all the information about the call. If you think you may be the victim of a scam, call the Big Bear Sherrif’s Department at 866-0100.
