A collision between a truck and a motorcycle, on Big Bear Boulevard just east of Summit Boulevard at 4:16pm yesterday (Monday, October 26), resulted in closure of the eastbound lanes in front of the Big Bear Lake Sheriff’s Station until 2am this morning. Those involved in the incident were 35-year-old David Russell of Big Bear City, who was driving a 2002 Ford F150 pickup, and 25-year-old James Dunigan, also of Big Bear City, who was riding a 2003 Yamaha 225cc motorcycle. Per the press release issued by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department this morning: “Russell was stopped in the northbound lane of China Garden Road, south of Big Bear Boulevard, waiting to make a left onto westbound Big Bear Boulevard. Dunigan was riding his motorcycle east in the #2 lane of Big Bear Boulevard approaching China Garden Road. Russell began his turn directly in front of the path of Dunigan. Dunigan abruptly applied the brakes causing the motorcycle to skid a short distance before striking the front driver’s side of the pickup truck. Dunigan sustained numerous severe injuries and was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center where he was later listed in critical condition. Russell was not injured as a result of the collision. The cause of the collision is still under investigation by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Region I Major Accident Investigation Team.”
Update: Sergeant Donald Mahoney of the Sheriff’s Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team tells KBHR that, as of Thursday, October 29, Dunigan remains hospitalized in Loma Linda. Though he had been wearing a helmet, he sustained major facial damage. His current condition is critical but stable.
