Build a Birdhouse Program Made Possible by Riffenburgh Lumber Company

Big Bear Lake, CA, July 22, 2010, 12:15pm – The Big Bear Discovery Center visitors and volunteers build a better birdhouse with the help of local business, The Riffenburgh Lumber Company.   Every other Saturday during the summer, families gather at the Discovery Center to construct birdhouses specifically designed for Western bluebirds.  The Build a Birdhouse program has been made possible by the generosity of Riffenburgh Lumber Company.  For over 10 years, Riffenburgh’s in-kind support along with program proceeds has benefited environmental education initiatives under the direction of the National Forest Association.  Together with the lead volunteers, their contribution will result in over 160 birdhouses built this season to create shelter for wildlife.  Each kit costs $6 for non-members or $5 for National Forest Association (NFA) members.  This activity is a great way for families to work together and create a functional piece of art for their yard while bringing enjoyment to birds and birdwatchers for many years to come.  “Western Bluebirds are considered the first sign of spring, so it’s really exciting to see them show up in your yard after a long winter,” said Robin Martin, volunteer coordinator for the bluebird house program.   The next Build a Birdhouse classes will be on Saturday, July 31st, August 14th and August 28th beginning at 10am.  Classes are limited to 20 people on a first-come basis.
