The San Bernardino National Forest has named Big Bear resident Scott Tangenberg as the new district ranger on the Mountaintop District, filling the former post of Kurt Winchester, who now serves as the forest’s fire and aviation management officer. Tangenberg, who has been the deputy district ranger for our area, assumes his new position on Monday, September 27. Says Forest Supervisor Jeanne Wade Evans, “Scott has been a true asset to the Mountaintop District. His skills in working with communities and employees across a broad range of resource areas make him a good fit for the district. I am pleased to see him taking on this new role.” Prior to serving as deputy district ranger on the Mountaintop, Tangenberg was the acting district ranger on the Trinity River Management Unit on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, where he served as agency administrator on the Iron Complex Fire of 2008. Tangenberg has also been the watershed program manager on the Lassen National Forest, and a hydrologist on both the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota and the Umpqua National Forest in Oregon, since joining the Forest Service in 2000. Tangenberg, his wife, two young daughters and newborn son live here in the Big Bear Valley and, he says, “It’s been a pleasure to work on the Mountaintop Ranger District and it’s a real honor to now serve as district ranger. The high-caliber employees and the strong cooperative work with the communities make this a great place to work.”
