Big Bear Valley, CA — Big Bear High School’s Jazz Band and Concert Band, under the direction of performing arts teacher Karl Thompson, participated in the Forum Music Festival off the mountain this past Friday and each earned silver medals for their performances, while the high school’s Concert Choir topped the competition, earning a gold medal. Two BBHS students, soprano Chelsea Broadhurst and trumpet player Vito Inman were also singled out for outstanding musician awards.
Bear Valley Unified School District’s younger musicians, which includes the BVUSD Elementary Strings, as well as the three groups of sixth to ninth graders participating in the Steven G. Mihaylo Orchestras, travel to Anaheim next week, for their competition festival, to be held at the Heritage Forum Theater. Last year, elementary strings students, who do their own fundraising to pay for the field trip bus, brought home a prestigious gold ranking for their performance.
In other news from Big Bear High School, this afternoon (Thursday, May 13) marks the final games for both baseball and softball teams in regular DeAnza League play. The Bears battle Yucca Valley at Big Bear High School in Sugarloaf; games begin at 3:30pm.
Update: The Bears varsity baseball team lost their match-up against Yucca Valley in a score of 2-8. The varsity softball team lost their game 3-9 to ultimate league champions Yucca Valley, placing the Lady Bears in second overall in the De Anza League. JV softball won, 11-5, making them co-champions!
