The historic 1920s cabin on Juniper Point had been scheduled to make the move from its lakeside perch to the Big Bear Valley Historical Society’s museum in Big Bear City a week ago but, given highway logistics, that move was postponed until last night. Just before 1am, the rustic cabin that once housed a post office and grocery store traveled down Highway 38 on a flatbed truck, driven by a professional driver hired by the Historical Society. As Historical Society President Gloria Meade relayed this morning, “What an experience! It brought tears to my eyes just watching that piece of history being moved carefully down the highway, heading to our museum. What a thrill! I know Tom Core is smiling, too.” Tom Core, Big Bear Valley’s late, local historian, once worked at the cabin, pumping gas there when he was a 14-year-old in the late ‘20s. So, it is rather special that the cabin’s new home is now on the museum property located on Tom Core Drive, just off Greenway in Bear City. The Historical Society plans to put the cabin on a permanent foundation before using it as the gift store for the museum, which opens for Memorial Day weekend.
