Big Bear Lake, CA, September 4, 2013 – Those wanting to attend tonight’s Regular Board Meeting of the Bear Valley Unified School District should note the location for part of it has been changed. The Closed Session will be held as planned at 5:15 p.m. at the District Office (42271 Moonridge Road). But the 6:30 p.m. Open Session will now be held at North Shore Elementary School (765 N. Stanfield Cutoff).
The Open Session was moved to the elementary school to accommodate what is expected to be a large number of participants in the scheduled discussion on Student Health and Nutrition. At issue is the right of organizations to use non-nutritious foods and beverages for after-school fundraisers. The meeting agenda’s relevant supporting documents include the District Board Policy on “Other Food Sales.” Adopted in 2007, it states in part:
Any food sales conducted outside the district’s food service program shall meet nutritional standards specified in law, Board policy, and administrative regulations and shall not reduce student participation in the district’s food service program.
The Board authorizes the Superintendent or designee to approve the sale of foods and beverages outside the district’s food service program, including sales by student or adult organizations, sales through vending machines, and/or sales at secondary school student stores for fundraising purposes.
A similar policy adopted in 2007 and revised in 2012 states:
The Superintendent or designee shall encourage school organizations to use healthy food items or non-food items for fundraising purposes. He/she also shall encourage school staff to avoid the use of non-nutritious foods as a reward for students’ academic performance, accomplishments, or classroom behavior. (cf. 1230 – School-Connected Organizations)
The public will be given an opportunity to comment on this agenda item prior to its discussion by the Board.
