Big Bear Lake, CA, August 27, 2012 — The state Department of Transportation is accepting applications for chain installers in local mountains this winter. Applications are available online at www.dot.ca.gov/dist8. Applications must be postmarked by Sept. 24 and mailed to Caltrans Maintenance, Chain Installer Application, 175 W. Cluster Street, San Bernardino, CA 92408. No walk-ins will be accepted, and getting a “Certificate of Mailing” from the post office is recommended. New applicants will need to pass a written and performance test in Running Springs on October 13; permit holders from last winter do not need to test. All chain installers will need to pay a permit fee of $200 to Caltrans.
Caltrans District 8 has 75 permit positions available across four designated areas:
· State Route 18, from San Bernardino to Lucerne Valley, including Snow Valley, 20 permit positions.
· State Route 330, from the 210 Freeway to State Route 18, 30 permit positions.
· State Route 38, from Bryant Street to Hatchery Rd, 20 permit positions.
· State Route 138, from State Route 2 to the 15 Freeway and State Route 2, 5 permits, good on both routes.
