Two pilots will be steering the Big Bear Airport District, now celebrating its 30th year, given Wednesday’s meeting of the Board of Directors, which includes Jay Obernolte, Butch Waymire, Julie Smith, Chuck Knight and Gloria Ann Greene. Jay Obernolte is, for the third time, president of the airport district, given a 4-1 vote with the support of all directors except outgoing President Waymire. In the past year, Obernolte had served as vice president, a position which has since been passed to fellow pilot Julie Smith, who received a 4-1 vote, with Director Greene opposing the selection. Upon assuming his role as president at the January 6 meeting, Obernolte was prepared to make committee assignments, with input from fellow directors, and moved to make the Terminal Building Committee a standing (rather than ad hoc) committee, on which Waymire and Greene will serve. Obernolte asked directors that their committees–including personnel, lease, safety and security, finance, and airport development—meet at least once a month, and General Manager Pete Gwaltney suggested that a meeting schedule be published, once those specifics are determined. As compensation for their service on the Airport District Board, directors receive $100 per meeting, not to exceed four in a calendar month.
