Winter Has Arrived: Make Sure You Have Chains In Your Vehicle

Big Bear, Ca, November 16, 2010, 5:00pm – As the winter weather approaches, KBHR and Cal Trans would like to remind you of chain requirements.  All vehicles, including those with four-wheel drive or snow tires, should carry chains when traveling in the mountains in the winter months.  According to Cal Trans, if you don’t have chains in your possession, you may not be allowed to proceed up the mountain in snowy weather.  When highway signs indicate that chains are required, you must stop and install chains, or risk being cited, and fined.  Do not stop in a traffic lane, instead pull safely off the roadway to install chains.  The speed limit when chains are required is 25, 30, or 35 miles per hour.  The following are the chain control restrictions.  R-1 restrictions are when Chains or snow tires are required.  R-2 restrictions require chains on all vehicles except four-wheel drives or all wheel drives with snow tires.  R-3 restrictions require chains for ALL vehicles, no exceptions.   R1 and R2 are the most common chain controls.  Remember to keep chains or cables in your vehicle, as it may snow when you least expect it.  KBHR will keep you updated on chain restrictions this winter both on air, and on our website at kbhr933.com.  [audio:https://kbhr933.com/wp-content/uploads/SP30231.mp3|titles=Have Chains In Winter ]
