This weekend marks the 13th annual Victor Alvarez Memorial Race at Snow Summit, which is a pro-style giant slalom featuring a cash purse of over $3,000. The Saturday event is open to both children and adults, and registration begins at 8am in the VIP room at Summit’s Bear Bottom Lodge, with qualifying runs starting at 10am, and head-to-head eliminations scheduled for 1pm. The ski race, named for former resort employee Victor Alvarez, who died after skiing into a tree while on duty during an after-hours sweep of the mountain, also serves as a fundraiser for the Snow Summit Junior Race Team. Following the competition, there will be an awards presentation and silent auction, which is open to the public. Items up for bid include tickets to Kings hockey and Clippers basketball games, as well as two trips to Breckenridge, Colorado. The silent auction portion of the Victor Alvarez event takes place in Snow Summit’s Bear Bottom Lodge on Saturday afternoon, once the GS competition wraps.
