Tomorrow, November 11, is Veterans Day, a legal holiday since 1938 recognizing the end of World War I, given the German signing of the Armistice, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918; in fact, Veterans Day was first recognized as Armistice Day, since being commemorated as such by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. Locally, Big Bear’s American Legion Post 584 will commemorate Veterans Day with a ceremony–honoring all veterans past and present, who served our country in both peace and wartime—to be held at Veterans Park in Big Bear Lake, lakeside off Big Bear Boulevard at Knickerbocker. The Veterans Day service on 11/11 will begin at 11:11am.
In recognition of Veterans Day, offices for the City of Big Bear Lake will be closed, and there will be no school for students of the Bear Valley Unified School District or Cal State University San Bernardino tomorrow.
In other news recognizing our military personnel, the Big Bear Valley Marine Corps Detachment 1038 will be celebrating the 234th anniversary of the U.S. Marine Corps on Saturday, November 14 in an event to be held at Northwoods Resort in the Village, starting with a 6pm social hour and including dinner and birthday cake at 7pm. The public is invited to join the Marine Corps Detachment, veterans and families of military personnel for the Marine Corps birthday gala, which will feature Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Richard Pittman as the guest of honor and featured speaker.
