Big Bear lake, CA, October 28, 2014 – Shortly before 5:00 a.m. this morning, a deputy of the Big Bear Sheriff’s Station heard screaming coming from the Travelodge in Big Bear Lake. He determined it to be a physical altercation between a male and a female. While making contact with the female, he noticed a male subject get into a vehicle and speed away from the location. Additional deputies responded to the incident and when the driver of the vehicle failed to yield, a pursuit began. A records check of the license plate found that the vehicle was stolen.
The vehicle fled East on Big Bear Blvd. at speeds nearing 90 miles per hour and continued on to Highway 38 towards Onyx Summit. Deputies from the Yucaipa Sheriff’s Station assisted by deploying a spike strip on the highway in Angelous Oaks. Big Bear deputies then performed a pursuit intervention technique, or PIT maneuver, that effectively stopped the vehicle in Angelous Oaks.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Stephen Cano, was taken into custody and booked on felony charges of spousal abuse, possession of a stolen vehicle, evading a peace officer, and disregard for public safety and remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail.
