Big Bear, Ca, August 10, 2011, 10:30am – The following is an update about the Holcomb fire that started yesterday at 1:27pm. Fire crews reached 50% containment last night at 5:00pm, and full containment at 10:00pm. According to John Miller with the US Forest Service some of the effected trees are old large trees which take a while to completely extinguish. Today residents and visitors may see helicopters dipping into the lake and dropping water over the burn area and small amounts of smoke may also be seen. Fire road 3n12 is still closed to motorists as it is being used by water tenders and fire crews to get to and from the site. The area of the Pacific Crest Trail that goes through the Holcomb Valley area has not been affected and is open for hikers to use. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
