Big Bear, Ca, June 2, 2011, 12:00pm – Yesterday, at approximately 2:00pm, there was a five-car accident on Highway 18, the front grade, resulting in a temporary closure of the road below the Running Springs area. According to the California Highway Patrol, Luis Uribe, a 28 year old resident of Anaheim, was traveling up bound on Highway 18 and entered a right hand curve at a high rate of speed when Joseph Bonier, 24 year old resident of Los Angeles, was traveling down bound and was going through the same curve when Uribe lost control of his vehicle and collided into the left front of Bonier’s vehicle. Two vehicles traveling southbound saw the accident happen, tried to swerve or stop, and ran into the original accident. A a vehicle traveling up bound also observed the accident, attempted to avoid the collision, and collided with the one of the vehicles. The five-car accident temporarily closed the road. While the three additional vehicles who were not part of the original accident were able to drive away from the scene, Uribe the driver that caused the accident, had major injuries and was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center while his passenger and Bonier had minor to moderate injuries. Responding agencies included the San Bernardino Police Department, San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department, Cal Trans, California Highway Patrol, and the Crest Forest Fire Department.
