Big Bear Lake, CA – On February 13, 2017 members of the community, City Council and City staff gathered in the Performing Arts Center to discuss the recent frustrations which resulted from the January 2017 snow storms.
David Lawrence City Engineer/Director of Public works offered a recap of snow plow operations during the January 19-January 23 snow storm. This once in ten year snow event caused a number of issues for residents and visitors alike due to snow removal issues and overcrowded streets. Following presentations from representatives of Snow Summit, Big Bear Fire Authority, United States Forest Service, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department the floor was opened to the public. Many spoke on options for improvement to snow removal, traffic control and a variety of other matters related to peak winter months.
The City recognizes that because of the infrequency of major snow storms these events become moments to learn from and that the following list of priorities will be undertaken for the next snow storm. .
- Caltrans is urged to clear all four lanes of Big Bear Boulevard so city crews can concentrate on removing snow from City streets followed by the sidewalks.
- Berm busters will be deployed after the initial snow plow pass and then again after the plows widen the streets.
- Code Enforcement has contracted for two additional code enforcement officers to assist in patrolling and handling abandoned or illegally parked cars.
- Additional tow companies will be utilized to tow cars from City streets.
- Additional CHP and the Sheriff’s personnel will assist with congestion and traffic issues.
- The Sheriff Department will position an officer at popular snow play areas to enforce parking restrictions.
In addition the City Council unanimously approved to transfer $300,000 from Snow Contingency Reserves to aid in snow removal efforts through the end of the season. The City Council plans to address this issue again with a “Winter Wrap-up” at their April 24, 2017 Regular Meeting and public participation is again encouraged.
