The local Meals on Wheels program has been delivering meals to seniors and shut-ins since being implemented in the Big Bear Valley in 1986. Though each recipient is charged $99 a month for the delivery of hot meals 10 times a week, the success of Meals on Wheels is primarily due to donations from local businesses and organizations, as well as the volunteers of the program, who donate their time and attendant expenses. To further the efforts of the Meals on Wheels program, which currently serves about 40 individuals weekly, Big Bear Disposal will host the 11th annual Mariachi Fiesta on Thursday at the Marina Resort. The $15 meal in support of Meals on Wheels will be catered by Nottingham’s, and will feature tri-tip and chicken, and hot dogs for the kids, who attend for free, if age 11 and under and accompanying an adult. The 5pm Mariachi Firesta will also feature a mariachi band, pirate ship rides on the lake, a drawing for a 42” flat screen TV, and a no-host margarita bar. Tickets can be purchased from the Robinhood Resort, the Big Bear Chamber of Commerce, Butcher’s Block, Mill Creek Trading Company and the UPS Store, and will also be available at the door at the big white tent at the Marina Resort, which is just west of the Big Bear Lake Post Office on the Boulevard. Parking for tomorrow’s event will be available at the Bartlett Lot, with a free shuttle available.
