Big Bear, Ca, November 3, 2010, 3:00pm – At approximately 3:05 on November 2nd, the Big Bear Municipal Water District, San Bernardino County Sheriff, Big Bear Lake Fire and City Fire responded to a call for service in Big Bear Lake. Doug Thompson and David Brinkley, from Alta Loma, were visiting Big Bear and capsized their motorized canoe approximately 300 to 400 feet off shore in Sawmill Cove. According to Thompson his canoe starting taking on some water so they started heading toward shore. Unfortunately both subjects ended up in the water before they made it to land. A Good Samaritan on shore called 911 seeing the subjects in distress, Thompson was able to make it to shore and Brinkley was struggling to stay afloat holding on to a life jacket. Staff from the Big Bear Municipal Water District arrived on scene and retrieved Brinkley from the water and he was transported to Bear Valley Community Hospital for evaluation. Water temperatures are in the low 50’s this time of year and boat traffic is extremely light. The MWD wants to remind everyone to boat smart, have your Life Jackets and remember rescue can be delayed. Patrol Operations have ended for the season.
