Big Cear, CA, 8/28/15 UPDATE – Due to more accurate mapping, the acreage burned has been decreased to 55 acres and is now 75% contained.
Big Bear, Ca, 8/26/15, 10:00am UPDATE – Fire personnel have increased the containment of the Summit Fire to 50% today with the size of the fire remaining at 100 acres.
Big Bear, Ca, 8/25/15, 1:10pm UPDATE– Today, fire crews and sawyers, timber cleaning personnel, are working to mitigate the standing dead and burned trees within the Summit Fire area and improve and extend the containment lines around the fire. Due to better mapping and with the emphasis on firefighter safety, the containment percentage has been revised to 30%. The size of the fire area remains at approximately 100 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation. All evacuations were lifted yesterday. The Bear Valley Unified School District closed all Big Bear school sites today due to poor air quality, however, school will resume tomorrow. Several Forest Roads in the vicinity of the fire remain closed today.
Big Bear Lake, Ca 8/24/15, 3:30pm UPDATE: – As of 2pm this afternoon, residents in the mandatory evacuation areas were allowed to return to their residences showing proof of address. As of 4pm, all residential areas will reopen with no restrictions. Forest service roads, trails and group camps in the fire zone will remain closed. The fire remains at 100 acres and 50% contained. A change in our weather with rain in the forecast could help but the chance of thunderstorms and accompanying lighting and erratic winds could hamper firefighting efforts although fire authorities believe that the Summit Fire is no longer a threat to the community. Firefighting personnel remain at 350.
Big Bear Lake, Ca 8/24/15, 8:50am UPDATE: – The Summit Fire remains at approximately 100 acres now with 50% containment. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations remain in effect.
Big Bear Lake, Ca 8/23/15, 7:30 pm – The Summit Fire has slowly grown to 100 acres and is now being reported at 30% containment. The Bear Valley School District has made no announcement regarding the status of school for Monday. Helicopters continue to douse the hot spots along with the aid of water from the Snow Summit snow making system. Mandatory evacuation orders are still in place with over 500 home in jeopardy. Other areas near the fire zone are under a voluntary evacuation including south of Brownie Lane east of Thrush dr north of Switzerland Drive and west of Summit Boulevard
Big Bear Lake, Ca 8/23/15, 5:00 pm – Mandatory evacuations remain in effect. The evacuation center is located at the Big Bear Convention center. Fire officials believe that although this situation remains volatile it is improving. There is a retardant line around most of the fire and they are reporting 10% containment with 85 to 100 acres in the burn area. All forest service roads there remain closed and the public is asked please remain clear so firefighters can operated unhampered.
Big Bear Lake, CA 8/23/15, 3:00 pm – Mandatory evacuations called for east on Knickerbocker to Georgia Road and south of Pennsylvania Road to the forest boundary.
Big Bear Lake, CA 8/23/15, 1:00 pm – A vegetation fire was reported at 12:40 pm near 2N08 above and south of the Big Bear Lake village. Fire crews and aircraft are responding to now what is being called the Summit fire which is burning in heavy timber and steep slopes. At this time there is no threat to Big Bear. Fire authorities have asked the public to stay away from the affected area. We have learned that the DC10 firefighting aircraft has been called to assist with suppression. It is now reported that is 30 acres in size.
