Big Bear Valley, CA, June 19, 2014 – The winter season is hard on our mountain roads, so repair projects and upgrades are in full swing.
On the west side of town, a road widening project is taking place. On Big Bear Blvd. between Pine Knot and Paine, primarily in front of Knights Inn and the Fireside Lodge, the north-side shoulder is being rebuilt to widen the road for a new center lane.
Another widening project is happening on the east side, specifically at Big Bear Blvd. and Big Tree Drive in front of the airport. New turn lanes and a center through lane are being added to enhance safety in the area.
The largest project is the pavement rehabilitation work on State Route 38 from Valley of the Falls Drive in Angelus Oaks to just north of the junction with SR 18 in Big Bear City. Caltrans will be overlaying Rubberized Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete after grinding the existing roadway, extending the life of the pavement and providing a smoother ride. They will also be adding new guardrail and a center line rumble strip to enhance safety for all motorists. This project will be going on through the beginning of October.
Keep these projects in mind as you schedule your trips around town and off the mountain via the 38. Add a little extra time, be patient, and slow down for the ‘cone zone’.
