Big Bear, Ca, August 31, 2011, 12:00pm – Over the last four years, locals and visitors alike have been climbing the seven highest peaks in Big Bear as part of the Seven Summits of Big Bear program. The hike series that was started by local outdoor enthusiasts Heather and Ted Devito has grown over the years, shifting from a mix of locals and visitors, to this years program that mainly consists of visitors who participate. At this year’s first hike up to Grey’s peak there were 100 people in attendance, and more people are dedicated to the hike series with only two new people attending the last hike, up Butler Peak. According to Ted, most of the locals who participate in the hike series have never hiked these peaks before. The next hike in the series is this Saturday, September 3rd, with the peak to conquer being Sugarloaf Mountain. Sugarloaf is the highest peak in the Big Bear Valley, and according to Ted is a lasting favorite to many local adventurers. The 10 mile round trip hike will start at 7:00am at the Sugarloaf trailhead, located off fire road 2N93. Hikers are encouraged to bring a hat, sturdy shoes, water, and food for the trek.
