Yesterday’s storm brought us strong winds, cool temperatures (down to 12.9 degrees early this morning), and plenty of snow—within the Big Bear Valley, we received a foot of snow, and up to 14 inches of fresh powder on the slopes of Big Bear Mountain Resorts! More snow is in our forecast, so today is the day to start attacking those berms. However, snowplow operators have worked overnight to make sure that Big Bear Boulevard is in good shape for travel today. Still, R2 chain requirements are in place for all mountain roads, including all streets within the Big Bear Valley, as well as Highways 18, 38 and 330. R2 means that you must have chains on the drive wheels of your vehicle—unless in a four wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels and carrying chains. Even if you have a four-wheel drive, it is the law to carry chains when traveling in the mountains during the winter months; failure to do so could result in a fine of $108. If stopping to put on chains, please be sure you are safely out of the roadway before doing so. Also, snow conditions are in effect, so no parking on city streets to allow for snowplow operations. If your vehicle is blocking snowplows, it may be towed and/or ticketed.
