Big Bear, Ca, June 29, 2011, 3:00pm – The newest in water sports, stand-up paddle boarding, is the latest craze to hit not only Big Bear Lake, but bodies of water across the US. “Simply put, SUPs are easy to learn, a great way to explore flat waters, and nonstop fun,” said Captain John Sanders, owner of Captain John’s Fawn Harbor Marina. “It’s like surfing, but much easier. If you can stand, you can paddle.” Captain John is even offering free paddle boarding, as part of “Babes on Boards”, a weekly service that happens Thursday nights at Captain John’s Fawn Harbor at 5:00pm, and is for women only. If you want to try your hand at competing on the stand up paddle board or SUP, or in a canoe or kayak, the 4th annual Big Bear Paddlefest returns Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10. On Saturday, July 9 there are clinics for beginner and advanced paddlers taught by local paddling instructors, boat and board demos with Seda and Necky kayaks and Hobie paddleboards, and an outdoor-industry sports exhibit. SUP, kayak and canoe races are scheduled for Sunday, July 10, and are open to all levels of paddlers. The races include a 30K, 10K, and 5K races.
