The Run the Bear Big Bear Lake Marathon is officially a go for September 12, given special event approval granted by the City of Big Bear Lake’s Planning Commission in their meeting this week. The Public Hearing with regard to Run the Bear, according to the City’s Director of Planning Jim Miller, “Went pretty smoothly. The Lighthouse Project has a circulation plan all worked out.” This plan involves rolling closures on the race route around the lake and, as proposed, should only involve 2- 3 hour closures of streets including Big Bear Boulevard and the North Shore portion of Highway 38, as well as Pine Knot Avenue, Stanfield Cutoff, Sandalwood Drive, Park Avenue, Knight Avenue, and other residential streets in the Eagle Point area. The Run the Bear Marathon, which is on the Saturday after Labor Day, will also include a bike tour, half-marathon, 5K and one-mile fun run. In their meeting of June 17, the Planning Commission also granted approval for the 2009 Big Bear Camp Meeting, a church gathering hosted by Big Bear Believer’s Chapel at Snow Play that will run from July 19 through July 31.
