Big Bear, CA, May 23rd, 2016 – Big Bear Lake played host to numerous law enforcement agencies from around California and Arizona this week.
The participating agencies took part in state of the art sonar training on Big Bear Lake. The training exercise was hosted by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies used the training sessions on the Sheriff’s Department boats to better prepare for future investigations. Many of the law enforcement agencies require staff with expertise in search and rescue or evidence retrieval operations on lakes and ponds.
They may be searching for a missing person, stolen property, a vehicle or a discarded weapon used in the commission of a crime.
The sonar equipment is able to search large areas quickly, scanning several hundred feet of lake or river bottoms with each pass of the patrol boat. Sonar equipment varies from department to department but generally it produces detailed images of the underwater environment regardless of water clarity.
Participating agencies in the sonar training included officers from Merced, Venture, Solano, Trinity, Placer, Del Norte and Tuolumne Counties.
