San Bernardino County 2011 Year In Review

Big Bear, Ca, December 29, 2011, 12:00pm – 2011 was a busy year for the County of San Bernardino.  In the beginning of the year the County held 18 community meetings, including one in Big Bear to identify the Countywide Vision.  Fifth District Supervisor Josie Gonzales was elected as the board chair for two years, with First District Supervisor Brad Mitzelfelt being elected as the vice chair for two years.  Ground was broken in March for a new courthouse in downtown San Bernardino that was partially funded by the county.  Mark Hartwig was appointed as the new Fire Chief for San Bernardino County, and the Hill Fire burned 1,158 acres in the Oak Hills area.  County Supervisors  introduced several reform proposals during 2011, with hopes to restore the public’s trust in the government.  The district lines were redrawn after results from the 2010 census showed a need to do so.  The District Attorney’s office continued in its aggressive prosecution of gangs, and the county Sheriff’s Department once again partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration to participate in the nationwide drug take back day.  The board also extended supplemental military leave benefits for county employees called to duty.  And in November, in honor of National Adoption Month, the county held its annual Adoption Finalization event, which saw 50 children officially united with their new families.  2012 will be a big year for the County with elections taking place for Supervisors, including the seat currently held by Supervisor Neil Derry.
