New Rules of The Road Take Effect January 1, 2011

California, December 17, 2010, 12:00pm – January 1^st of 2011 will not only usher in the New Year, but also a handful of new laws for California’s motoring public.  “The new laws are designed to make California roadways safer for travelers regardless of their mode of transportation,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow.  If you ride a motorcycle and are younger than 21, as on January 1^st, 2011 you will be required to successfully complete a motorcycle safety course that will administered by the CHP.  Laws regarding motorists who Drive Under the Influence or DUI repeat offenders.  Section 23579 was added to the vehicle code which authorizes the court to order a 10-year revocation of a driver’s license if a person has been convicted of three or more DUI’s.  Also under this new law, a motorist will be allowed to apply for reinstatement of his or her driver’s license with the DMV after 5 years if the person installs an Ignition Interlock Device in their vehicle.  If you have a Hybrid vehicle with a Yellow Clean Air Access Sticker that was set to expire January 1^st of 2011, you have been given a 6-month extension until July 1, 2011.  Hybrids with White Clean Air Access Stickers will be valid until January 1^st, or 2015.  For complete information on new laws visit the Legislative Counsel website at www.leginfo.ca.gov.
