Big Bear, Ca, May 12, 2011, 8:00am –
Big Bear Elementary School will kick-off the spring growing season for it’s Peace Garden with a visit next week from Rev. Jean Sweet who moved from Big Bear last fall to Montana. Sweet was the driving force behind the creation of school gardens in the district, and will return to Big Bear next week to help students, teachers and garden volunteers prepare and plant the garden courtyard. To mark the beginning of the Peace Garden’s fourth year, Big Bear Elementary will hold a school-wide celebration on Wednesday, May 18 from 10 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. In addition to activities in the garden, Sweet, an author of “What Grows in a Garden?” will sign copies of the book. She will be joined in the last hour by Big Bear High School sophomore Katie Adams, the book’s illustrator and a former Big Bear Elementary student. Proceeds from sales of the book will benefit school gardens in the Bear Valley Unified School District.
