Results of City of Big Bear Lake City Council Meeting of May 10

Big Bear Lake, CA – At last night’s regularly scheduled meeting of the City of Big Bear Lake City Council, council members voted that a letter and resolution should be sent to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to defer implementation of AB 32, the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Bill, also known as the California Global Warming Solutions Act, which states that CO 2 emissions return to 1990 levels by the year 2020.  The letter will indicate that the City doesn’t have the finances or staff to move this forward.  The City of Big Bear Lake is not alone in making this request.  Ten to fifteen different California cities are requesting the same.  The City is also worried about losing more jobs and businesses if the bill is put into practice now.  The implementation would cost California businesses billions of dollars possibly forcing more businesses to leave the State.  The AB 32 bill was written in 2005 and passed by the State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Schwarzenegger in 2006.  At that time, this was the most stringent greenhouse gas legislation passed on the planet.  In other agenda items, the Big Bear Village street closure on May 21st for the Amgen Tour of California was extended to Cottage Lane.
