Big Bear Lake, CA July 3, 2015 – New this year will be a traffic plan to help ease July 4th congestion that previously has plagued the end of the fireworks program. Officials are estimating between 140,000 and 160,000 visitors on the 4th. Simply put, Big Bear Boulevard, Highway 18, nearest the fireworks display will have a “No Left Turn” procedure in place. That is in order to help move traffic faster by preventing the slow process of crossing and blocking the highway with left turning vehicles. What does that mean and how can you better deal with this new and temporary traffic plan? Plan ahead. If after the show you need to go East, then park on the South side of Big Bear Boulevard. Driving home will then be a right turn, no left turn needed! And if you need to travel West, then park on the North side of Big Bear Boulevard for the same reason. But if you are unable, or you forget this tip, then an unscheduled scenic trip around the lake will be an alternative. Also, keep in mind that 8 major intersections will be controlled by Law Enforcement including Highway 18 at the Big Bear Dam.
Boats will also be affected and you can expect delays of at least one hour retrieving your boat after the show. The East and West MWD boat ramps, along with Pine Knot Marina, will not allow departure from those areas for one hour following the conclusion of the fireworks display.
Anyone who has experienced the post fireworks traffic congestion can appreciate this plan. Our advice is to be patient, be courteous and follow law enforcement directions. As with most newly implemented plans, there may be things learned in the first year. No doubt this will be the case for drivers as well as for city, county and state traffic planners. With a little luck and and a lot of community spirit this could be the start of a new tradition, less July 4th traffic congestion.
KBHR will again this year play patriotic Music synchronized to the fireworks on 93.3 and new for this year on our sister station 102.5. For many listeners 102.5 may be a better choice for reception west of Stanfield Cutoff. Donations to the Rotary Fireworks fund may be made on line at www.bigbearlakefireworks.org. Have a happy and safe July 4th celebration.
