Starting today, and every Tuesday, the mountain-area headquarters of the California Highway Patrol will be offering a Child Restraint Fitting Station. The purpose of the carseat fitting station is not enforcement, but child safety, as CHP officers will be on hand to educate parents and caregivers on the proper use of child restraints. During the process, a child passenger safety technician will check for seat recalls, make sure the child is secured properly, and determine if the seat is still the proper size and fit for the child using it. After the evaluation is complete, the technician will explain the findings to the parent and teach them how to better use their child restraint. And, if needed, the CHP will even replace a child restraint, thanks to a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety, though there are some eligibility requirements in order to receive a free carseat. Our local CHP notes that there is no cost for these services, just peace of mind for parents, knowing that children are safely secured. Our local CHP office is located in Running Springs at 31230 Highway 18; appointments are not necessary for the Child Restraint Fitting Station offering on Tuesdays, though scheduled appointments will have priority. To make an appointment, call the CHP at 867-2791.
