Big Bear, Ca, March 9, 2011, 6:29pm – At approximately 6:20pm on March 9th, a single engine 1946 Aeronca plane attempted to land at the Big Bear City Airport with only one wheel. Wally Webber, the pilot and owner of the plane took off, and once he noticed that one of his wheels had detached from the plane he called in to the unicom frequency and alerted the airport staff that he was going to attempt to land with one wheel. Airport staff contacted emergency responders who were all on scene before Webber attempted to land. Webber successfully brought the plane down on one wheel, however when the leg that was missing the wheel touched the runway it veered to the right and when the plane hit the dirt off the runway, the plane flipped over and came to a stop. Webber was able to get out of the plane, and told KBHR that he had no injuries.
