Big Bear, Ca, January, 31, 2011, 8:00am – The morning of Wednesday, January 26th, the Big Bear Middle School held an Awards Assembly for their 7th and 8th grade students and parents. Forty-one 7th graders and sixty-seven 8th graders received awards for either high honors or honor roll for the first semester of the 2010-2011 school year. Recognition was also given to students who had outstanding attendance, meaning no absences, for the first semester. Additionally, students who have outstanding citizenship grades were recognized consisting of twenty-eight 7th graders and thirty-three 8th graders. Bi-lingual English learners who showed an improvement of 5% or more on their state required California English Language Development Test scores in one year were also recognized with an improvement award. According to BBMS principal, Julie Chamberlain, last year the Awards Assembly was moved from an evening event to a daytime event so that students who are not receiving awards can see how good it is to be rewarded for grades and good behavior, hopefully, to encourage those students to do better themselves. This helps to emphasize the school’s motto of “Make it a great day, or not, the choice is yours”.
